Feng Shui for Better Sleep
Feng Shui (or Chinese Geomancy) is a system of balancing your surroundings
and living in harmony with the elements of earth. It takes into
consideration the elements of nature, colors and compass direction. It is
believed that Feng Shui, when applied correctly, can bring many advantages
to one’s life, including better health and wealth. The application of Feng
Shui principles in our homes and businesses would commonly involve the
arrangement of furniture and items in the room to facilitate this harmony.
Feng Shui involves balancing the life forces (Chi) and this revolves
around the Yin (female) and Yang (male) forces. It is believed that the
“Yin” is known to be the more passive and restful force of the two, and
therefore the bedroom should be set up to have more “Yin” in order to
promote a sense of calmness and, of course, have better sleep.
Here are some tips on how Feng Shui can be used to create a more conducive
environment for sleep and rest.
Never position the bed such that your feet are directly facing the door.
This is known as the coffin position, as traditionally, the deceased were
let out of funeral homes feet first. Position the bed such you can see the
door, but not with your feet pointing towards it.
Avoid sleeping beneath a window. If this is not possible, cover the window
with a thick curtain.
Do not have anything hanging or looming over the bed, like a beam or a
ceiling fan.
Avoid having a mirror directly facing your bed such that you can see your
own face and upper body in the reflection. If this is not possible, cover
the mirror with a cloth to block the reflection. This applies also to all
reflective surfaces like TV and computer screens. The belief is that the
negative “Chi” is unable to leave your body as it is reflected back.
Paint your bedroom walls and ceiling in pastel colors (“Yin”). Choose
pastel colors for bed sheets and pillow covers. Avoid bright and loud
colors (“Yang”) as these will interfere with sleep.
Keep your room neat and tidy. Remove all negative items from your room;
this may include documents for legal problems, debts, office work or items
given to you from someone you do not have a good relationship with.
These are just some of the suggestions you can use to make your bedroom a
better place to sleep.
