Below is a checklist for you insomniacs to keep
handy. Try it, you never know. Any one of these tips may just help to
break you out of your stubborn sleep problems.
1.
Keep the Room Temperature Cool
Sleeping in a hot and stuffy room will mess up your sleep patterns. Make
sure your room is kept cool, but not freezing. Studies have indicated that
temperatures below 54 degrees Fahrenheit and above 75 degrees Fahrenheit
are generally disruptive to sleep. People living in hot and humid tropical
countries may have a harder time falling and staying asleep, and may need
to invest in air conditioning units to keep the temperature down.
2.
Use an Eye Mask
A common cause of insomnia is the lack of Melatonin production in the
brain. Being in a dark environment helps in this Melatonin production
process. An eye mask can help you fall asleep faster than you would
expect. Dream Essential's Eye Masks come with specially shaped insides
that don't put pressure on your eyes when worn, so you can open your eyes
comfortably even with the eye mask on and not have any light leaking in
from the sides.
3.
Keep the Air Clean and Fresh
It is important to keep the air in your room clean and fresh. Pollen and
dust can be extremely disruptive to sleep - and bad for your health too.
Keep your room clean and dust free as much as possible. Remove clutter and
other junk that shouldn't be there. You bedroom ideally should be a place
only for sleep and not anything else, so get rid of all that rubbish!
Consider using an
Air Purifier to keep the air clean, fresh and germ free.
4.
Go Natural with Salt Lamps
Salt Lamps act as natural air purifiers that give out negative ions that
are beneficial for health. In fact negative ions are found in the vicinity
of natural settings like waterfalls, lakes, gardens and parks. Notice how
the air smells fresh at these places? You can have that too - right in
your bedroom!
5.
Chuck that Computer Out!
Computers, laptops, television sets and any other forms of electronic
devices generate what's known as positive ions. Positive ions are known as
"fatigue ions" that cause headaches, lethargy and insomnia. If you have
any of these electronic devices in your room (many of us are guilty of
that), you should leave them out of your bedroom as these will interfere
with sleep.
6.
Have some Herbal Tea
Have a nice cup of
chamomile tea before bedtime. Chamomile contains
relaxing properties that will help you fall asleep. No chamomile? Then a
glass of warm milk can also do the trick. Other relaxant alternatives
include
melatonin,
tryptophan, and
valerian root among others.
7.
Listen to Relaxation Music
Wind down with
relaxation music. Calm yourself to soft instrumental music,
or listen to nature with the tune of singing birds, the waterfall, or the
sound of a distant thunderstorm. Some
sleep music are designed to
specifically relax your mind and drift you off to sleep.
8.
Try Essential Oils
Aromatherapy is a form of alternative medicine that uses volatile liquid
plant materials, or essential oils, and other aromatic compounds from
plants for the purpose of affecting a person's mood or health. Many
different types of essential oils have been known to relax the mind,
enabling you to sleep easier. These include the ever popular
Lavender,
Ylang Ylang and
Bergamot.
9.
Use White Noise to Mask Unwanted Sounds
White noise basically contains the entire spectrum of sound frequencies
that the human ear can hear and is used as a mask to cancel out unwanted
noise. It is effective for use in the bedroom where you want to avoid
hearing annoying neighbors, traffic and other noises that may interfere
with sleep.
White Noise is available in CDs,
downloads, or a device such
as a
white noise generator.
10.
Meditate to Relax
Meditation helps to bring you into a state of deep relaxation. It brings
many benefits like clarity of mind, stress relief, dealing with
depression, fears, phobias, insomnia and many others. Apart from calming
the mind, meditation also has physical benefits like reduced cholesterol
levels and respiratory problems. Try a free sample of
guided meditation
